Starting April 8, 2014, Microsoft will end support for customers using Windows XP. With this date mere weeks away, many businesses still lack a transition plan. A major reason for this delay in many cases is unfamiliarity with the new operating system – you’re already familiar with the Windows XP user interface, and you think that it will require a significant amount of time for you and your employees to learn how to navigate Windows 8.1.
We’re here to dispel this myth – many of the features you know and love in XP are still available in Windows 8.1. Read on for some helpful tips and tricks to make your transition to Windows 8.1 a smooth one.
The familiar desktop is still there: The desktop is where apps such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint are accessed. To get to the desktop from anywhere in Windows 8.1, tap or click the Desktop tile on the Start screen, or press Windows logo key +D on the keyboard. Additionally, if customisation suits your fancy, you can even personalize your desktop with different backgrounds, colours and themes. If you choose too Windows can be configured to boot straight to desktop thereby bypassing Start screen tiles. In other words the same experience you have with Windows XP.
The Start screen hasn’t gone anywhere: Start is where Windows 8 displays apps, people, websites and folders in an easy-to-navigate tile format. To get to Start with a mouse, just move the mouse pointer all the way into the lower-left corner of the screen and click the Start button. To get back to Start using a touch screen, swipe in from the right edge of the screen and tap Start.
In addition to the familiar interface, Windows 8.1 has additional perks. The five charms—Search, Share, Start, Devices and Settings—are quick ways to get to frequently used actions such as searching the Web and your PC, printing documents and emailing photos and links. They’re always available on the right side of your screen, no matter where you are in Windows.
